Note: The timeline is based primarily on the community of Brookfield, Nova Scotia.



  1784 - William Hamilton and Daniel Moore, Brookfield's first settlers.

1784 - Only 2 good roads in N.S.: one from Halifax to Windsor, and the other, the "old Cobequid Road" from Halifax to Truro.

1789 - First wedding in Brookfield, Janet Downing and William Davison; Janet died just four months later.

  1800 - first sermon preached in Brookfield by Rev. John Waddell.

1809 - the first four-wheeled carriage passed through Truro.

1830 - Joseph Howe began publishing the "Nova Scotian", circulated to every hamlet and crossroad after 1830.

1833 - first church (Presbyterian) built in Brookfield (south of the Putnam House).

1835 - first "level" road extended from Truro to Brookfield. "level" roads were made by flattening hills instead of building over them.

1838 - population of Colchester County: 11,499

1842-1858 - Hiram Hyde of Truro operated a stage line from Halifax to Truro and Pictou. The line was discontinued with the opening of the railroad.

1857 - Baptist Church built in Brookfield; it later became Wood Brenton's grocery store.

1870 - the new Presbyterian Church (the present church) opened.

1879 - "Warning Bell Division of the Sons of Temperance" chartered in Brookfield

1873-1975 - Brookfield produced nearly 3.5 million tons of limestone.

1888 - 1908 - 8,500 tons of iron mined at Brookfield.

1889 - 1892 - James Graham, Brookfield, warden of the Municipality of Colchester County.

1894 - Brookfield Creamery and Cheese Manufacturing Company opens.

  1901 - Thomas Higgins built a mill for manufacturing shingles, lumber and flour and grist, later to become Brookfield Lumber Co.

1901 - population of Brookfield: 950; population of Colchester County: 24,900

1909 - the automobile started to become a way of life - scaring horses and threatening human life

1911 - 1913 - Robert H. Kennedy, Brookfield, warden of the Municipality of Colchester.

1916 - Brookfield Mutual Telephone Company formed

1918 - a small mine was operated at Graham's Siding (Brentwood)

1920 - Brookfield Creamery moved to Truro and added ice cream to its commercial products

1920 - the present (2001) United Church Manse was purchased and the Minister resided in Brookfield

1920 - 1928 - J.W. Brenton, warden of the Municipality of Colchester

1950 - Brookfield Memorial Elementary School and South Colchester High School are built

1973 - Don Henderson Memorial sportsplex built

1979 - Brookfield adopted a family of "boat people", Dat Ly and family

1980 - Brookfield Elks win Gold Medal at National Fastball Tournament

1984 - Brookfield Bicentennial Celebrations: publication of "Fragments of the Past"; Carter Homestead Open House

1998 - Brookfield Railway station moved to the Ed Creelman Park

July 1, 2000 - Opening of the Brookfield Railway Station Museum
